Portable Air Conditioners: Cool Any UK Room This Summer

3 in stock now Free UK delivery Expert advice & UK aftercare

A portable air conditioner is the fastest way to cool a hot UK room without the cost and disruption of a fitted system. As the UK's air conditioning specialist, we stock a full range of portable air conditioning units — from compact 5000 BTU bedroom models to powerful 12000 BTU machines for living rooms and home offices — all with free UK delivery. Whether you're searching for a cheap air conditioning unit to survive a heatwave or a quiet 3-in-1 cool, fan and dehumidify model, the right choice comes down to two questions: what size do I need, and what will it cost to run?

Sizing: how many BTU for your room

Cooling capacity is measured in BTU (British Thermal Units). As a rough rule, allow around 600 BTU per square metre. A typical 12m² bedroom suits a 7000 BTU unit, an 18m² living room wants 9000-12000 BTU, and sunny south-facing or top-floor rooms need a step up. Undersize it and the unit runs flat-out without ever cooling; oversize it and you pay more upfront. Use our BTU calculator to get an exact figure before you buy.

Running cost: the honest numbers

At roughly 26p/kWh, a 9000 BTU unit drawing about 1kW costs around 26p per hour to run — a 12000 BTU model nearer 32-34p. Look for an A energy rating and R290 refrigerant for the best efficiency, plus a sleep mode to cut overnight consumption.

Be realistic about portables. No portable air conditioner is truly hoseless — the exhaust hose must vent hot air out of a window using the supplied kit. Evaporative "air coolers" skip the hose but underperform in humid British summers, as they rely on dry air to work. For genuine cooling, a hosed refrigerant unit from brands like MeacoCool, Pro Breeze, ElectriQ or De'Longhi Pinguino is the dependable choice — and a single portable cools one room, not a whole house.

How to choose the right air conditioner

How to choose a portable air conditioner

1. Match BTU to room size. Work on ~600 BTU per m². 5000-7000 BTU suits bedrooms; 9000-12000 BTU handles living rooms, kitchens and home offices. Sunny or top-floor rooms need extra capacity.

2. Check the running cost. Favour an A energy rating and eco-friendly R290 refrigerant. At ~26p/kWh a 1kW unit costs roughly 26p/hour, so a sleep mode and timer pay for themselves overnight.

3. Mind the noise. Bedroom buyers should look at the decibel (dB) rating — quieter units sit around 50-54dB. A dedicated sleep mode dims the display and lowers fan speed.

4. Want more than cooling? Many units are 3-in-1, adding fan and dehumidifier modes for damp British shoulder seasons. WiFi app control adds remote and scheduled operation.

5. Plan the venting. Every portable needs window venting — check the supplied kit fits sliding or casement windows, and consider self-evaporating models to skip emptying water tanks.

Air Conditioners — frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to run a portable air conditioner per hour in the UK?

At the current price cap of around 26p per kWh, most portable air conditioners cost roughly 26p to 35p per hour to run. A 9000 BTU unit drawing about 1kW works out near 26p/hour, while a more powerful 12000 BTU model is closer to 32-34p/hour. Using eco or sleep mode and a timer noticeably reduces overnight running costs.

What size air conditioner do I need for my room?

A good rule of thumb is around 600 BTU of cooling per square metre of floor space. So a 12m² bedroom suits roughly 7000 BTU, while an 18-20m² living room needs 9000-12000 BTU. Add extra capacity for sunny, south-facing or top-floor rooms, and for spaces with lots of windows or heat-generating appliances. Our BTU calculator gives an exact figure in seconds.

How many BTU do I need for a bedroom?

Most UK bedrooms are well served by a 5000 to 9000 BTU portable air conditioner. A small single room of around 10m² is comfortable on 5000-7000 BTU, while a larger double or a warm loft bedroom benefits from 9000 BTU. For bedrooms, also check the decibel rating and choose a model with a quiet sleep mode.

Do portable air conditioners need to be vented out of a window?

Yes. A refrigerant portable air conditioner produces hot exhaust air that must be vented outside, normally through a window using the supplied hose and window venting kit. Without venting, the unit simply recirculates warm air and won't cool the room. The kits fit most sliding and casement windows, and patio-door and wall-vent solutions are available for awkward setups.

Do portable air conditioners work without a hose?

Not for true cooling. Any refrigerant air conditioner needs an exhaust hose to expel heat outside, so a genuinely hoseless cooling unit doesn't exist. The hoseless machines you'll see are evaporative air coolers, which only lower the temperature slightly and lose effectiveness in the high humidity of a British summer. For reliable cooling, choose a hosed portable unit.

What is the difference between 9000 BTU and 12000 BTU?

The number refers to cooling capacity: 12000 BTU shifts more heat per hour than 9000 BTU, so it cools larger rooms faster. As a guide, 9000 BTU suits rooms up to around 15m², while 12000 BTU is better for living rooms and open-plan spaces up to roughly 20m². The higher-capacity unit uses a little more electricity, costing a few extra pence per hour to run.

Can a portable air conditioner cool a whole house?

No. A single portable air conditioner is designed to cool one room at a time, with doors closed to keep the cold air contained. To cool multiple rooms you'd need a unit in each, or a fitted multi-split system. For whole-home cooling, a multi-room split air conditioning installation is the more effective and energy-efficient option.

What is the quietest portable air conditioner?

The quietest portable air conditioners operate at around 50-54 decibels on their lowest setting — comparable to soft background conversation. Look for models that advertise a low dB rating alongside a dedicated sleep or night mode, which lowers fan speed and dims the display. MeacoCool and other premium brands are popular with light sleepers for exactly this reason.
